If you’re looking for a semi off-the-grid weekend adventure, the Magalies Rocks the Cradle (MRtC) Weekend Festival offers up 72 hours of relax, explore, experience and unwind. A combination of distinctive offerings set against a magnificent backdrop of mountains, valleys, rivers and indigenous woodland makes this three-day celebration unmissable!

An instant pick-me-up for city-saturated dwellers, an off-the-beaten-track experience for those wanting more than a usual weekend getaway or the perfect opportunity to unlock fresh perspectives, the festival is much-loved by families, foodies, art and music lovers, adventure-seekers, those seeking an inspiring breathing space and couples who want a romantic escape to a place that resonates with a 2.5 billion year history on the doorstep of the Cradle of Humankind.
Now in its third year, MRtC is fast-becoming a firm favourite on South Africa’s festival calendar and, like last year, is expected to attract thousands of people next month for a memorable two-night three-day adventure that’s just an hour’s drive from Johannesburg, Pretoria and Rustenburg.
“This festival is unique in that it is not located at a single venue but has been designed to showcase the entire Magalies region as a must-experience tourist venue,” says Hannelie Hartman, Chairperson of the Magalies Business Forum. “It is, quite literally, a community effort. Business owners are either involved by showcasing their offerings at their own venues or by supporting other events in the town. We have worked hard to put together more than 100 events at 50 venues so our guests can experience the true spirit and hospitality of the area!”
Hartman and her team from the Magalies Business Forum have grouped together the more than 100 events into Focus Areas so visitors can plan their long weekend around the interests of each member of the family or travel group. These include Kids activities (hiking trails, a visit to an alpaca farm, puppet shows, a knight’s tournament, competitions, outdoor activities, a trip to an ice cream factory and elephant interaction), Arts and Crafts (original home-made wire art, exhibitions by Pretoria’s Bruinette Brecher, a showcase of local ceramic artist, Obakeng Mohloiwa’s work, a range of esoteric art by Geraldine Talbot, an exhibition by Sam Savage, a Sanlam Top 100 portrait competition finalist, Performing Arts (a variety of live music events including Afro-Jazz, a Brecher, Brel and Breyten poetry evening, a community festival and a gospel concert), Food ( wine pairing weekend, delicious home-made food and treats, and pie-making classes), Talks and Workshops (includes guided educational hikes, discussions by the Magalies Historical Society, and a presentation on Waterbirds of SA) and Outdoor and Adrenalin activities.
So, round up your family, friends or your significant other, pack a bag or a rucksack, strap on your adventure boots and make your way to the Magalies Rocks the Cradle Festival for an extraordinary, authentic experience.
